Stand in Uganda, Rwanda and DRC simultaneously, the "Old Man's Teeth" volcano.
Mount Sabyinyo, meaning "the old man's teeth" in Kinyarwanda, a reference to its jagged eroded peaks, is one of the most challenging and spectacular hikes in the Virunga range. The mountain marks the point where Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC meet, and the third and highest peak at 3,669m sits precisely on the triple border, allowing hikers to stand in three countries at once.
The trail is demanding, nearly vertical in places, with wooden ladders bolted into the rock faces, but it is only accessible from the Ugandan side, making it uniquely a Uganda experience. The lower slopes harbour mountain gorillas, elephants, buffaloes and forest antelopes. The hike typically takes a full day and is rated among the most physically rewarding mountain experiences in East Africa.
