Mount Muhabura, meaning "the guide" in Kinyarwanda, is an extinct volcano standing at 4,127m on the Uganda-Rwanda border, named for the way it served as a navigational landmark for ancient travellers. It is the third highest of the eight major Virunga Mountains and one of Uganda's most rewarding day hikes.
The steep but straightforward trail typically takes a full day, and the summit is crowned with a small crater lake, a dramatic reward for the effort. On clear days the summit offers extraordinary views of Lake Edward, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and the peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains. The lower slopes of Muhabura are home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, making an encounter possible even before reaching the summit.
