Mount Moroto, whose native name "Moru To" means "the western mountain," rises to 3,083m from the semi-arid plains of northeastern Uganda's Karamoja region. It is the highest of the volcanic chain that runs along Uganda's border with Kenya, which also includes Mount Kadam and Mount Morungole.
The mountain is home to the Tepeth (also known as So) people, one of Uganda's least-known indigenous communities, who have preserved a traditional lifestyle closely tied to the mountain environment for centuries. The forest reserve around Moroto protects habitats ranging from arid thorn savanna to dry montane forest, with over 220 recorded bird species including the Jackson's hornbill and eastern paradise whydah. Natural springs on the slopes feed small rivers across the region. The mountain sees very few visitors, making it a genuine off-the-beaten-path adventure.
