The most accessible Virunga peak, bamboo forests, golden monkeys and a swampy caldera.

Mount Gahinga, derived from the Kinyarwanda word for "a small pile of stones," is the smallest of Uganda's three Virunga peaks at 3,473m, nestled between Muhabura and Sabyinyo. Its gentle trail through bamboo forest makes it one of Uganda's most accessible mountain hikes, ideal for first-time hikers or those seeking a gentler Virunga experience.

The summit caldera is over 180 metres wide and fills with a swampy bog, a dramatic and unexpected landscape at altitude. The bamboo forests on the slopes are one of the best places in the world to encounter golden monkeys, an endemic subspecies found only in the Virunga range. Mountain gorilla sightings have also been recorded on Gahinga's slopes.
