Mount Elgon

Mount Elgon is a geological wonder, the remains of what was once Africa's highest mountain, its summit collapsed to form one of the world's largest intact calderas, measuring over 40km across at its widest. Standing at 4,321m at Wagagai Peak, the mountain straddles the Uganda-Kenya border and is estimated to be 24 million years old, Africa's oldest volcano.

Elgon is famous for its cave systems where elephants enter deep into the rock to mine salt with their tusks, a behaviour found nowhere else in the world. The Sipi Falls cascade in three dramatic stages down the western escarpment, and the slopes host extraordinary biodiversity with over 300 bird species recorded in the national park. The Bagisu community produce some of Uganda's finest arabica coffee in the farmlands surrounding the mountain.
