The sixth highest mountain in Africa, locally called Kiyanja, meaning "the mountain."
Mount Baker, locally known as Kiyanja, rises to 4,844m at Edward Peak and is the third highest mountain in Uganda and the sixth highest in Africa. It was first summited in 1906 by an expedition led by Prince Luigi Amedeo, Duke of the Abruzzi, the same Italian mountaineer who first summited most of the Rwenzori peaks. It lies within the triangle formed with Mount Stanley and Mount Speke, enclosing the spectacular upper Bujuku Valley.
The mountain offers remarkable trekking through the surreal Afro-alpine vegetation of the Rwenzori, giant groundsels, lobelias and tree heathers that create a landscape unlike anywhere else in the world. The clouds and mist that permanently wrap the Rwenzori peaks make every day of trekking here an atmospheric experience. Baker sits within the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994.
